Advice for 170° Opening Wide Angle Hinges

26th Sep 2024

The wide-angle hinge is useful in an array of applications within pieces of furniture. However, due to the geometry required to achieve this, Blum cannot completely eliminate gaps where objects could be inserted.

The safety factors to take into consideration when selecting cabinet hinges, are highlighted in Blum's 2022-23 catalogue & technical manual, warnings can be found on pages 86701.

Blum take great pains when developing new components to ensure all safety aspects are taken into consideration and the 170° hinges have been designed to ensure that gaps are kept to the absolute minimum. However due to the nature of the opening geometry of 170° hinges, it is not possible to totally eliminate gaps. (an object with the diameter of a pencil can still be inserted within the opening mechanism).

For instance, back in 1999 Blum heard of a case in Northern Ireland where a small child lost the tip of their finger in the mechanism of a wide angled hinge. A similar case has been reported which took place in Essex in 2002. These issues have been highlighted in the Blum Catalogue since then.

In light of these incidents, we would advise where cabinets are accessible to small children, consumers should be made aware of this danger and that the fitting of child safety latches will prevent any possible accidents occurring.

There are alternative solutions, the Blum 0-protrusion 155° hinge is available with integrated BLUMOTION or as non-soft close, it benefits from a smaller gap between the front and the carcass. As such, the 155 degree Blum hinge may be the solution for you with the reduced opportunity for objects to be inserted within the hinge arm.
